Getting Dressed Shouldn’t Be This Hard (But It Is): What to Wear as a Girl Everyday?
I stood there; hair half wet, towel on head, and a whole damn wardrobe open like a movie scene. And still, nothing. Nothing felt right. Not the cute top I bought last week. Not the kurta my mom loves. Not even the “safe” jeans I always fall back on.
And this isn’t a one-time thing.
It’s every Monday. Every brunch plan. Every "let's meet at 5?" message. Getting dressed shouldn’t be this hard… but it is.
If you’ve ever stared at your clothes and thought, “Why do I hate everything I own?” — trust me, I’ve been there.
And honestly? It’s not your fault.
It’s Not Just You: Why This Happens So Often
Let’s agree. It’s never really about the clothes. It’s about how they make you feel (or… don’t).
You could have 27 tops, 12 dresses, and that one kurti that everyone says “always suits you.” But somehow, none of them feel right when it matters.
That’s not confusion — that’s what happens when your wardrobe doesn’t match your current mood, energy, or identity.
Add to that the fact that trends change every 6 minutes. One scroll on Instagram and suddenly you’re questioning everything you own.
“Is this still in?”
“Wait, are mom jeans cancelled again?”
“Should I wear linen now? Is that a ‘rich girl’ thing or just hot-weather logic?”
We’re constantly being told to buy more, dress better, be on trend, but no one’s talking about whether those clothes even feel like you.
Some of your clothes carry memories—a bad date, a failed job interview, a “I thought this was a cute day but ended up crying in a café” kind of vibe. You might not notice it, but your brain remembers.
And that’s why so many of us, even the ones who “dress well,” still stand in front of our closet feeling completely lost.
Back when we launched our first collection, we thought we were just making bags.
Not solutions. Not statements. Just… bags.
But what happened next shaped everything that Toteaa stands for today.
Girls started messaging us with things like:
“Honestly, I wear the same 3 outfits on loop. But now, I just pick the bag that feels right — and everything comes together.”
Another one that stuck with me:
“This tote made even my basic kurti-jeans look intentional. Like I planned it. Like I’m someone.”
At first, I thought they were just being nice.
But then we saw a pattern:
Our customers weren’t just styling the bag — they were styling around it.
That’s when it clicked.
Sometimes, one right thing makes the rest of the outfit fall into place.
Here’s What we understood (And swear by)
It’s not always about the clothes. It’s about having a base layer of identity in your look; something that feels like you, even on the most confusing day.
For many of our buyers, that became the bag.
In fact, we noticed this shift more with college girls and early-working women — the ones who don’t have the time or budget to buy a new wardrobe every month, but still want to feel put together.
When one of them told me:
“This tote has become my Monday decision hack”
At first, it felt like a sweet compliment. But then more messages came in. From college students, working women, even moms.
All saying some version of the same thing: “This bag makes getting ready easier. It just pulls everything together.”
And that’s when it hit us. Maybe the problem was never the outfit.
Maybe it was the lack of one thing that made the whole look feel complete.
I knew we were doing more than selling fabric stitched with compartments. We were offering a sense of clarity in the daily chaos of “What do I wear today?”
So... How Do You Actually Decide What to Wear?
Here’s what I’ve learned after 100+ outfit meltdowns, a few design wins, and of DMs from girls who felt the exact same way:
It’s not about rules. It’s about resetting how you approach your wardrobe. Here’s what I do:
1. Dress for Your Mood, Not Just the Occasion
“Feeling soft girl? Don’t force a boss-babe vibe.
Don't templatize yourself just to fit-in.”
You don’t wake up with the same energy every day. So, why should your outfit pretend otherwise?
Some days, you want to float through life in pastels and tote bags. Other days, you want your eyeliner sharp and your outfit louder than your thoughts. And sometimes, you just want to disappear in a black oversized tee and look unbothered.
The mistake? Dressing how we think we should feel, instead of how we actually do.
So next time. Skip the “what’s appropriate” panic. Start with: how do I want to feel today?
Mood first. Mirror later.
2. Pick One Hero Piece
“I always start with one thing that feels right. The rest follows.”
This tip changed my life, and apparently, a lot of girls feel the same. Instead of trying to force a full look, just start with one piece you’re excited to wear.
It could be:
- That one perfect-fitted tank top
- A kurti you feel emotionally attached to
- A bag that’s too pretty to leave behind (👀 hello Starry Night)
Let that one item be the anchor. Build around it. Everything else gets easier once you stop trying to solve the whole puzzle at once.
3. Create an Outfit for Your Day, Not for Pinterest
“It’s cute online. But I have to walk in the sun, not pose in it.”
Pinterest, Instagram, and Zara mannequins are all lying to you. They don’t have to live in those outfits, you do.
What looks great in a flatlay might feel like a trap in real life:
- Bodycon in 38°C Udaipur heat? No thanks.
- Long sleeves in the metro rush hour? Regret.
- White pants at a roadside chai stop? Brave, but foolish.
Build your outfit around your reality: where you’re going, how much you’ll move, and how long you’ll be out. A practical outfit isn’t boring. It’s wearable. And wearability is 10x sexier than struggling in style.
4. Less New Clothes. More Repeat Confidence.
“Outfit repeater? Hell yes. But make it ✨intentional.”
You don’t need 20 new things. You need 2–3 that make you feel like you. Then you need a few smart add-ons to make those outfits look fresh.
This is exactly why we made Toteaa bags with bold prints, solid compartments, and a ‘wear-it-daily’ vibe, not to sell more, but to make what you already own feel new again.
Repeat the top. Repeat the jeans. Change the accessories, the bag, the earrings, the hair. New energy, same outfit.
It’s not called re-wearing. It’s called owning your look. When Deepika Padukone can re-wear her, hum kaunsi hoor ki pari hain :D

Outfit Ideas for Real-Life Moments
No one's waking up every day wondering what to wear to Paris Fashion Week.
We're all trying to figure out what to wear to your cousin’s mehendi, a last-minute Rakhi lunch, or that awkward office meeting in 40 degrees.
Let me share some ideas for life moments; the ones that sneak up on you. The ones that matter, even if they’re not always Insta-perfect.
Raksha Bandhan Outfit Ideas
Rakhi always feels a little emotional, a little chaotic, and somehow, every year, you realize the outfit is still unplanned. It’s that sweet spot between festive and casual; the kind of day where you want to feel like you, just a little more polished. I have some standard fallbacks that always work for Rakhi outfits:
- Pastel kurti with minimal makeup — soft, graceful, and looks great in family photos.
- White chikankari kurta with colorful dupatta and silver bangles — a timeless combo that works; whether you're hosting or hopping houses.

Diwali Outfit Ideas
You’ve been invited to five Diwali parties, two office events, and your mom wants a pooja photo by 7:00. It’s the one festival where every look matters, but comfort should still be part of the plan, I believe. So, here's what has worked for me:
- Indo-western angrakha set with oxidized jewellery and clean hair — looks coordinated, feels effortless, and lasts the whole day.
- Cotton or organza saree with sneakers and a compact tote bag — ideal if you're moving between houses, photos, and snack breaks.
Durga Puja Outfit Ideas
Durga Puja isn’t just a festival. It’s a mood. You need something traditional enough for the pandal but practical enough to move through crowds, eat bhog, and maybe dance a little.
- Handloom cotton saree with a contrasting blouse — culturally rich and breathable for long days.
- Flared skirt with a knotted shirt or crop top — blends old-school charm with new-age cool.
Karwa Chauth Outfit Ideas
This one’s intimate, romantic, and very rooted in tradition — but no one talks about how long the day is. You want to look beautiful, but you also want to breathe, move, and possibly nap.
- Chiffon saree with a sleeveless blouse and loose bun — dreamy for moonlight selfies, without the weight of heavy embroidery.
- Kurta with palazzos and a soft dupatta — practical, flattering, and just festive enough.
Couple Photoshoot Outfit Ideas
It’s already awkward enough posing for fake-candid photos. Don’t let a fussy outfit make it worse. What you wear should feel like the two of you — effortless, aligned, and timeless when you look back at it 10 years from now.
- White shirt and denim for both — crisp, minimal, and always works on camera.
- Complimentary colors in classic cuts — think kurta and maxi dress in earthy tones or matching pastels, not loud twinning.
College Outfit Ideas
College fashion is basically: look great without looking like you tried. You need something that works for presentations, chai breaks, and sudden plans that involve walking 2km in the sun.
- Oversized graphic tee with wide-leg jeans and a tote — casual with just enough attitude.
- Short kurti with sneakers and a printed tote — academic, functional, and secretly cool.
Trip / Travel Outfit Ideas
Travel outfits are a battlefield. You want comfort, but you also know there will be photos, new cities, and a suitcase that’s already packed wrong. Your look should make you feel put-together without sacrificing practicality.
- Neutral co-ord set with layered jewellery and a soft tote — packs well, wears better, and handles temperature changes.
- Biker shorts with a long shirt and crossbody sling — unfussy, great for flights, and doesn't scream tourist.
Summer Vacation Outfit Ideas
Vacation should feel like a break from overthinking. Your outfits need to be easy, heat-proof, and versatile enough to go from exploring streets to sitting by a beach café.
- Flowy cotton dress with a large cloth tote — light, breezy, and low maintenance.
- Linen trousers with a cropped blouse — elevated casual that photographs well in any setting.
Summer Office Outfit Ideas
Nothing tests your fashion patience like dressing for work in Indian summers. Your outfit has to say “I’m responsible” while letting your body breathe and your personality peek through.
- Cotton shirt dress with subtle earrings and a sleek laptop tote — boardroom-ready, sweat-safe.
- Kurti with culottes and a structured tote — mix of ethnic and modern, perfect for all-day wear.
Real Talk: What Helps Picking What to Wear
I asked Rupali, our co-founder (and honestly, the original tote girlie) what finally helped her break out of the "I hate all my clothes" loop.
She didn’t even pause before answering.
“I stopped chasing perfect looks. I just ask - Will this outfit let me be myself today?”
That shift changed everything for her. Instead of trying to dress to impress, she started dressing to feel comfortable, confident, and present. Not trendy. Not curated. Just… herself.
She told that over time, she developed a few simple habits that made her mornings (and mood) so much better:
- Always keep one fallback outfit ready — the one that always works, even on the worst day.
- Build three go-to outfit formulas — like kurta + denim, co-ord + tote, or tee + wide-legs.
- Choose one hero bag that blends with all three — so you’re never left scrambling for something that “matches.”
“When I wear something that doesn’t feel like me, I feel off the whole day. And that’s just not worth it anymore.”, her words.
And honestly? That’s the mindset we now design Toteaa with, not just what looks good, but what makes sense for your life, your vibe, and your every day.
Remember, You’re Not Confused. You Try to Dress for 3 Versions of You, Everyday
You’re not indecisive. You’re just evolving and have a lot going in your head.
Some mornings you want to feel soft and invisible. Other days, you want to walk into a room and own it. Some days call for earrings and kajal. Others? Just a tote and dry shampoo.
So if your wardrobe looks confused, maybe it’s because you’re juggling multiple roles, moods, and phases, all at once. And that’s not a flaw. That’s just life.
You don’t need more clothes.
You need more clarity. About what feels good, what fits your current season, and what you’re trying to say without saying a word.
So if your outfits are all over the place, maybe it’s because your life is too.
That’s okay.
Let’s dress for it anyway.
